Where to Start

A good place to start your search to find a contractor is here with gogeiger.com. Remember to also look at the contractors web site to review their services and qualifications in more detail. Also talk to your family, friends and neighbors. Find out whom they used and how happy they have been with them. Then narrow your selection by checking on the following:

  • Your contractor is required to have a license.
  • Are they a member of Work Force testing.
  • Do the technicians specialize in installation.
  • Don't be afraid to ask you contractor about his or her training, experience, and membership in associations.

A. Contractors are required to be EPA certified to handle refrigerant in cooling systems. They are also required to own and use refrigerant recovery equipment.

  • Will they be efficient and professional and do all work in one day.
  • Ask for proof that your contractor is certified. Make sure every person sent to your home is certified. They are required to carry their certification.
  • Check the contractor's record and their performance.
  • Get a list of their past projects and take a look at their work.
  • Call the state and the Better Business Bureau to find out if there have been any complaints against them.
  • Get a list of references from the contractor.

B. Call the references to see how well they performed. Ask specific questions:

  • What work did they do?
  • Did they start the project and finish the project when promised?
  • Did they arrive on time every day?
  • Did they clean up the job site?
  • Did they work continuously until the project was completed or did they leave and come back?
  • Would you use them again?

C. Check with the manufactures and see if they qualify to meet theire highest level of contractors. Most are only at a standard level. Providing a standard service.

D. Do they need a big ad in the yellow pages to stay busy or do they stay busy with word of mouth advertising?

E. You are responsible for all workers on your property, so be sure the contractor is insured. Ask to see a valid Certificate of Insurance. Call the insurance company to be sure that the certificate is valid.

  • Always obtain a written contract or proposal before allowing your contractor to install a new system and be sure to ask about warranties.
  • The contractor who gives you the lowest bid may not be the best choice for you. Paying slightly more may get you better installation and better reliability. Carefully evaluate a contractor's proposal to ensure you get the installation and reliability that best meets your needs.

Narrowing the list of contractors

Once you have your estimates, all contractors will say they are the best. Now you have to decide who really cares about you and your work at a fair price for both parties.

Some ways that may help in telling who may be better:

  • How many days will it take to do my job professionally?
  • Will the owner visit the installation afterwards, a sales person or no one at all?
  • How do you know everything will be safe?
  • How did they prove you will get a quality job.
  • Are all certifications the same?
  • Most problems are with the procedures during the installation. What is the company going to do to avoid problems.
  • How long is the warranty?
  • What are the warranty restrictions?
  • Do they sub-contract the installation or any part of the total job?
  • What is the emergency service response time?
  • Will they return my money and put it in writing if not satisfied?
  • Do I have to give them money before they do the work?
  • Will they provide a written guarantee job to be done by a certain date?
